Ricky
Romain is an internationally respected human rights artist whose work can
be found in the collections of globally important institutions including
Amnesty International and The United Nations, as well as many private
collections around the world. His work is widely exhibited, recently being
shown at Tooks Chambers in London; the Chambers of the leading human
rights lawyer, Michael Mansfield QC. His work is visually powerful,
created far more from his emotional response to the world around him, than
any literal recording of fact. The paintings in this solo exhibition are
thought-provoking, at times controversial, and always possessed by a deep
sense of introspection and peace. In this solo show at The Marle, Romain’s
work comes home to Axminster where the artist lives and works. Ricky
will be joining us in the gallery to discuss his work with you on the
evening of the Private View.

The Society of Wood Engravers' national show was first hosted in the south west at Axminster's Marle Gallery in 2012. The response to that show was phenomenal with people travelling from across the south west and beyond for a chance to see the premier showcase of UK and international wood engraving work. There are some 130 works in the exhibition from over 70 different artists. There is a strong tradition of wood engraving in the southwest and the region's artists are well represented in this national exhibition.
Leading exponents of the art, well known by collectors, will be exhibiting work such as Howard Phipps, Hilary Paynter, Anne Desmet RA, Miriam McGregor, Harry Brockway, Pete Lawrence and Simon Brett to name just a few.
The Wood Engravers Exhibition opens with a private view on Saturday 13th April and a Demonstration Day with Hilary Paynter on Saturday 20 April between 12:00 and 4:00pm

Angus
Rutherford is an up and coming local artist with a distinctive, whimsical style
based around his well-honed skills of observation and drawing, learnt at
Harrow School of Art, and later refined through a combination of life and
long walks. Angus is a
confirmed lover of long-distance walking; the rhythms and meanderings of
landscape are tangibly reflected in the flow of his pen across paper.
Emma
Forrester started her career in a far more extrovert, less contemplative
setting; working as a scenic artist in West End shows and for the Royal
Opera. She has been widely
exhibited in London and now concentrates on her paintings, primarily still
lives that bear an expressive use of line to portray everyday objects such
as vases and tea-cups. Forrester’s
unique technique involves etching through paint to draw patterns over
objects creating an effect reminiscent of textile design. Indeed, Forrester sites the influence of textiles on
Matisse’s work as being an important inspiration for her own work.

Exceptional
young artists under the age of 19
The Marle Gallery is proud to kick-start the new year with a celebration of young talent found in our local area. Working with the Arts Departments of Axe Valley Community College, Colyton Grammar School, Exeter School, and The Woodroffe School, we are delighted to show-case this exciting, unpredictable and uncompromising array of work for young people under the age of 19 who have, in our opinion, talent beyond their years.
Could you be about to buy the next David Hockney for a song? Or spot the next Barbara Hepworth ahead of the rest of the world? It's possible, maybe probable.
In any event, come and support the life-affirming talent of young people in the south west and in so doing encourage them to believe that a life-long career in the creative arts is within their grasp.
The Marle Gallery will be donating 20% of sales to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

Anticipation
Simon
Cook solo exhibition
Private view 3rd November 2012 3pm to 7pm
|
|
|
|
How
to capture a moment in time, the essence of the feelings evoked by a shaft
of light breaking on distant hills, or a solitary poppy adrift in a
cornfield?
Simon
Cook's non-figurative work steps beyond the recreation of the image seen
by our eyes, and seeks to portray the often all too fleeting emotions that
are stirred within ourselves. Cook's canvasses are a beautiful array of
colour and light, contemplative yet with an inherent sense of anticipation
in what is to follow. Simon
builds layers of transparent pigment, combined with gold, silver and metal
leaf to maximise luminosity, allowing ambient light to interact with the
painting; a burst of sunshine transforming the colour and mood of the
work.
This
work invites your undivided attention and asks for no less than a solo
exhibition. Come and immerse yourself in a world distilled to the simple
and beautiful by master practioner, Simon Cook.

Elemental
Molly
Garnier and Michael Sole
Private view 8th September 2012 3pm to 7pm
|
|
|
Nature and the elements, both of landscape and the human form, are central to the work of Molly Garnier and Michael Sole.
After the vibrancy and pace of the Summer Exhibition, “Elemental” softens the tone and slows the pace, introducing time and space to appreciate the detail and finesse of these two artists' work.
Molly Garnier is well known for her small smoky oil paintings of the female nude.
Since moving to her native Norfolk, she has been inspired to paint the coastline capturing the distinctive, slightly bleak colours of that very particular seascape.
Michael Sole is captivated by the whole sensory experience of sea and sky. Michael responds to the natural energy of his subject: big seas are portrayed with a physical and confident painting technique enabling the viewer to place himself at the centre of this sensory experience of the world in its most elemental form. |

An
exhibition of paintings and prints by Martin Grover and Vicky
Oldfield, both London artists being rarely seen
in the south west.
Grover’s work is optimistic and life affirming .
Grover is master at capturing the pathos, humour, and
beauty in everyday scenes and life experiences.
He trained at the Royal Academy Schools, has been shown
internationally, including the Royal Academy, John Moore’s
Exhibition Liverpool, V&A museum and the House of Commons.
Having
experimented with a variety of printmaking techniques, Vicky
Oldfield has found her metier in collagraphy, a highly textural
form of printing from a plate built up with layers of everyday
materials. Oldfield
is becoming increasingly collectable having shown at the Royal
Academy, Bankside, and The Mall Galleries, London.
Martin
Grover and Vicky Oldfield will be available at the private view
on Saturday, 10 March, 3-7pm Please contact The Marle Gallery for an invitation.
